Kakarici jedí vše co ostatní ptáci. Pokud nepřijímají některá krmení, tak je na ně musíte postupně navykat. Směsi zrnin by neměly obsahovat příliš tučná semena, jako například slunečnici, kardi, konopné semínko (semenec). Tyto zrniny musíme ve směsi koordinovat, abychom ptákům nepoškodili játra. Já například nekrmím černou slunečnicí a slunečnici nahrazuji raději kardi. Ve směsi je velice malé procento slunečnice bílé a žíhané. Dále by se v krmné směsi nemělo vyskytovat velké procento lněného semínka a nigru. Dobrými zrninami jsou lesknice, čirok, oves, pšenice (hlavně naklíčená), různé druhy pros. Pokud ptáky krmíte suchou směsí a na dně misky vám zůstanou nevyloupaná semínka, je vhodné vylouskané slupky rukou odstranit a doplnit poloviční denní dávkou, tak aby na druhý den bylo vše vylouskané. Pokud se tak nestane, tak už zrniny odstraňujeme. Velice rádi mají květy afrikánů, jablka, mrkev, kiwi, pomeranče, mandarinky i ananas z konzervy. Kiwi je jako první vyhledáváno a proto usuzuji, že je u nich nejoblíbenější. Naopak pomeranče jsou méně vyhledávány. Zahraniční chovatelé, kteří se zabývají chovem těchto papoušků doporučují podávat především travnaté složky ke krmení, ovoce, zeleninu, klíčené nebo 24 hodin namočené zrniny. Suché zrniny nepodávají vůbec, už kvůli tomu co jedí kakarici ve volné přírodě, raději předkládají různé druhy trávy. Kakarici mají velice rádi mixované směsi.
Směs v hnízdním období a krmení mláďat:
Uvařené vajíčko (vařím 10-12 minut, někteří chovatelé doporučují vařit, až 40 minut) rozmixuji se skořápkou. Dále přidám piškoty, suchý rohlík (někdy doplním suchým chlebem), sušené kopřivy, granule pro papoušky a na závěr mrkev. Pokud je směs moc suchá, můžete přidat rozmixovaná jablka (ale ne moc, obsahují hodně tekutiny). Do směsi můžete přidat cokoliv co najdete doma. I vitamíny pro ptáky (raději jen trochu). Čím pestřejší je strava, tím lépe pro ptáky.
